Charles E. Stephens Memorial Scholarship Applicants
Applicants for the Charles E. Stephens Memorial Scholarship are members of St. Paul United
Methodist Church who have demonstrated sustained involvement/participation in church
programs and activities, as well as achieving academic excellence. Recipients are selected by
an independent committee, exclusive of members of the Willing Workers.
QUINCY AUSTIN BENBOW is a graduate of Bishop McNamara High School in
Forestville, Maryland. His involvement in diverse school activities included Junior
Varsity and Varsity Football, and serving in the peer ministry, as a Television
Production Anchor, a Math tutor and as Captain of Varsity golf organization. This fall
he will attend Penn State University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
His occupational goal is to work for a company that specializes in designing cars that
use alternative sources of fuel, such as electricity or air. Quincy is a member of St.
Paul United Methodist Church, Oxon Hill, Maryland, where he has been an usher for 9
years. He has also been actively involved as a member of United Methodist Men, a
counselor at Vacation Bible School, and in serving breakfast at Carrol House. Quincy
is the recipient of the Charles E. Stephens Memorial Scholarship in the amount of
$2,000.00.
The Willing Workers Community Scholarship was established in 2006 and renamed in 2007
after Jacob B. Terrell, Jr. who served as the organization’s president in 2005-2006 and whose
community service and is awarded to the well-rounded graduating senior attending one of the
schools in the organization's service area. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA,
documentation of community service and financial need, an impressive 400-500 word essay
discussing a recent event and how it has influenced the student’s outlook for the future and
their career choice, and participate in an interview with the selection committee of Willing
Workers.
DANIEL H. BELL is a graduate of Oxon Hill High School, Oxon Hill, Maryland. This fall
he will attend Capitol College in Laurel, Maryland where he plans to major in
Computer Engineering. His goal is to restart the engineering business that his father
once owned and operated. Daniel was a proud participant in the first Robotics
competition at Oxon Hill High School. As the programmer on the project, he was able
to test and make vital changes to the robot at the competition. He was also active in
community service activities, the main thrust of which was his work with the
Empowering Minds Foundation. He was also part of the Feed the Hungry Ministry at
church. Daniel will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship.
ANNA THOMPSON graduated from Suitland High School, Suitland, Maryland as
valedictorian of her class. She plans to attend either the University of Maryland,
College Park campus, or Georgetown University, Washington D.C. Her major
concentration will be chemistry as a prerequisite to pursuing her occupational goal of
attending graduate school to attain a PharmD degree on her way to becoming a
Pharmacist, or doing research medicine. Anna’s involvement in school activities
included volleyball, the National Honor Society, and serving as the President of Darwin
Biology Club, Vice President of Daughters of Nandi, and Sgt. At Arms and Peer Leader
of the Christian Club. She also participated and held leadership positions in
community services that extended from tutoring students for Biology HSA and
volunteering at FedEx field, to secretarial work and keeping patients happy at
Georgetown Hospital. Anna will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship.
