2008 Scholarship Recipients

Applicants for the Charles E. Stephens Memorial Scholarship are members of St. Paul United Methodist Church who have
demonstrated sustained involvement/participation in church programs and activities, as well as achieving academic
excellence. Recipients are selected by an independent committee, exclusive of members of the Willing Workers.
Peter Benjamin Holliman attends Surrattsville High School and plans to study pre-med at Old Dominion
University, Bowie State or Morgan State. Peter served as one of the youth preachers in June 2007 at St.
Paul United Methodist Church where he is also co-president of the usher board. Other church activities
include the senior citizen Thanksgiving dinner, youth services, manhood rites of passage, Miss Kitty’s
dinner/lunch, Warm Nights, and the Agape Café. Peter received a $500 scholarship.
Zakiya Zabra Hutchinson attends Friendly High School and plans to study early childhood education at
Morgan State University. Her goal is to teach kindergarten before opening her own daycare center.
Zakiya is a member of the youth choir, the usher board, the liturgical dance team, and the United
Methodist Youth Fellowship. Zakiya received a $2000 scholarship.
Christina Lyles attends Oxon Hill High School and plans to study accounting at Morgan State or Howard
University. Her goal is to work in private industry before starting her own accounting business. Christina’s
extracurricular activities include captain of the volleyball team and manager of the girl’s basketball and
softball teams. She is a member of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship, youth choir, usher board, and
also served as an acolyte. Christina received a $500 scholarship.
Victoria Lyles attends Oxon Hill High School and plans to study physical therapy at Prince George’s
Community College. Victoria plays basketball and softball; she is in the Cultural Awareness Club and on
the yearbook staff. At church, she has been an acolyte and is a member of the United Methodist Youth
Fellowship, youth choir, and usher board. Vicroria received a $500 scholarship.
Ashley Janae Moore attends Friendly Hill High School and plans to study English and theater arts at
North Carolina Central University. Ashley’s goal is to become a high school teacher and explore acting
and writing. She is a peer mediator and member of the Tri-M Honor Society, The National Society of High
School Scholars, and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Ashley is a member of the
United Methodist Youth Fellowship, youth choir, usher board, and has participated in numerous special
church activities. Ashley received a $1000 scholarship.
Riva-Niger Smith attends Oxon Hill High School and plans to study Psychology at South Carolina State
University or Howard University. After graduation she plans to work as a therapist in the school system
and pursue an advanced degree. Riva participates in numerous school activities including the Junior
Reserve Officer’s Corp (Chief of Staff), National Scholastic Student and the Honor Society. At church, she
is an honorary member of the speech choir, member of the Library Committee, United Methodist Youth
Fellowship, Youth Choir, usher board, honorary member of the speech choir and member of the Library
Committee. Riva-Niger received the Charles E. Stephens Scholarship for 2008 in the amount of $3000.
Timothy Eugene Sultzer, Jr. attends Friendly High School and plans to study sports management at
Coppin State University. Timothy’s goal is to manage a sports organization on the local, state or
national level. He is a pitcher for the baseball team and an honor roll student. He has been an acolyte
and participated in many church special activities. He is vice president of the usher board, a teacher’s
assistant, a member of the youth choir, and the United Methodist Youth Fellowship. Tim received a $500
scholarship.
Georgina Thompson attends Oxon Hill High School and plans to study nursing at George Washington
University. After graduation, she plans to work as an obstetrics nurse. She is a member of the youth
choir and participates in the Sunday School. Georgina received a $500 scholarship.

Jacob B. Terrell, Jr. Community Scholarship Recipients
The Willing Workers Community Scholarship was established in 2006 and renamed in 2007 after Jacob B. Terrell, Jr. who
served as the organization’s president in 2005-2006 and whose tireless efforts and vision helped to make this program a
reality. This scholarship recognizes community service and is awarded to the well-rounded graduating senior attending one
of the schools in the organization's service area. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher GPA, documentation of community
service and financial need, an impressive 400-500 word essay discussing a recent event and how it has influenced the
student’s outlook for the future and their career choice, and participate in an interview with the selection committee of
Willing Workers.
Raven Janai Howell is a senior at Suitland High School and plans to study nursing at the University of
North Carolina at Charlotte. She has a number of awards including the 3rd Place winner in Physics in the
2007 Howard University Math and Science Program, Learn Foundation Essay winner, and Certificates of
Academic Excellence. Raven has also participated and had leadership positions in community service
activities including feeding and packing clothes for the homeless at Martin Luther King Memorial Library
earlier this year and leadership positions in the Kiamisha Youth Empowerment Organization. Raven
received a scholarship for $1000.
Riva-Niger Smith (See description above). Riva-Niger was the recipient of a $1000 scholarship in this
category as well as the Charles E. Stephens Scholarship for 2008.
